SIPPS: Ah-Ah Moment for a Student!

My colleague, Marni shared this experience...

I was teaching a SIPPS Extension lesson today for a teacher who was going to observe another teacher during that time. I was working on lesson 23…and we got to the point in the lesson where they were reading from the storybook. I was asking some comprehension questions about the previous chapters (Since I had not read this story)….when all of a sudden one of the students looked up at me and said….”I really like this program”. I looked at him and said….”What?” He proceeded to tell me that before he knew about this, he could not read…and now he can!!! I asked him if he could tell me specifically what about it he thought helped him so much and he said, “It teaches me all of the sounds. I could only read short little words before I started….now I am reading words like firefighter!! I could never do that before!”  J  It is so nice to see SIPPS working, in action, and making such a difference with kids!

Thank you, Marni, for sharing this encouraging experience with everyone. I often find that using SIPPS not only builds the student's decoding and spelling abilities, but it's the whole child who benefits. Can you imagine the impact on overall learning when a child increases in confidence, participation in class, and motivation to read!?! We need to celebrate these successes and make the connections to the social, emotional gains as well. Your post warms my heart. Thank you!
