What's Taught
Individualized Daily Reading is a structure for classroom independent reading in which students read books at their “just-right” reading levels for at least 30 minutes per day. The teacher actively participates in the IDR period by conferring with individual students to monitor and support their reading comprehension. IDR can be paired with any comprehension program to provide students with the abundant practice and support they need to become proficient readers.
IDR in Making Meaning
The Making Meaning comprehension program from DSC includes time each day for structured independent reading. Students read books at their individual reading levels using appropriate comprehension strategies. They then reflect on what they’ve read and share their ideas with partners.
IDR in After-School Time
You can use the IDR libraries to build a collection of leveled fiction and nonfiction books that allow every child to find “just-right” books. Extend DSC’s AfterSchool KidzLit reading-enrichment program by making time for children to read IDR books at their individual level and pace.
