What's Included
Words in Action materials are provided in grade-level packages*—one for each classroom. All the materials needed are provided.
The Words in Action program provides a Teacher's Manual, 18 trade books, and additional grade-level specific materials in each grade-level package.
Each classroom package contains:
Teacher’s Manual (2 volumes at grades 3–6)
The Teacher’s Manual includes support and directions for 20–25 weeks of vocabulary work. It provides daily questions and activities to introduce words and motivate students.
18 Read-aloud Trade Books
The selected trade books are age-appropriate, highly engaging, and rich in language. The books include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and represent a variety of subject matter, content areas, and cultures.
Word Cards (boxed sets at grades K–2; on the CD-ROM only at grades 3–6)
Word cards include one word card for each vocabulary word introduced (boxed sets of 80 at grades K–2; 120 on the CD-ROM at grades 3–6). Each word card shows how the word is spelled and includes its definition and a visual reference.
Picture Cards (boxed sets at grades K–2; on the CD-ROM only at grades 3–6)
Picture cards include one picture card for each vocabulary word (boxed sets of 80 at grades K–2; 120 on the CD-ROM at grades 3–6). They provide visual support for the words’ meanings and can be used to introduce and review the words.
Pocket Chart (grades K–2)
A pocket chart is included to easily display picture cards and word cards during the lesson.
Companion Materials CD-ROM
The CD-ROM includes PDFs of the word and picture cards, as well as blackline masters, family letters, and assessment record sheets. At grades 1–6, it also includes prompts, crossword puzzles, and word lists.
